On Thursday morning, I accompanied Kak Aishah and a few other ladies to Khartoum North, a place involved in the recent flood. If you remember, during Ramadhan, Khartoum experienced heavy rain for a few days. In certain areas, it created flash floods and destroyed a lot of homes.
In some areas the floodwater didn't recede for weeks, actually it was about 3 weeks! Some of these people lived in homes made from self-made bricks (sometimes a combination of donkey's dung and dust), so when the material was soaked for a long period of time, it became soft and deteriorated. In some cases, it left the family staying in ruins and makeshift huts.
During Ramadhan, Petronita's Welfare Group did a donation drive and Kak Aishah as the head with close monitoring from the Country Office surveyed some areas that needed our help. We were advised to go to this place, at the outskirts of Khartoum. Kak Aishah with the help of a few friends went out and buy the supply and packaged it. She bought flour, sugar, biscuits etc. We also wanted to give out clothes donation to the victims.
So, on Thursday morning, around 9.30 am, we left in two vans full of food and clothes. At first, we had to pick up Mdm Salma to show us the way. Some officers from the Country Office also followed, Mr Ibrahim as the translator, Kak Zainon and Kitt. Petronita was represented by Kak Aishah, Kak Adik, Asma' and me plus Mr Amir Rashid...hehehe
