Block A Raya Open House - Preparation Part 1

Our block decided to have a raya open house on the 10th of September 2008. It was decided even before Ramadhan ended... hehehe, so eager huh?!!! The menu and the date were revised because at first it was supposed to be on the afternoon of the 11th. Anyway, after several 'informal' meetings, everything went according to plan. I was really glad that even those with 'single-status' joined in.

Our theme was supposed to be traditional, which we translated into 'ketupat' and the colours of yellows and greens. Sh. Najwa (the most creative among us) decided that we made ketupat out of ribbons and put sweets inside, so that it could be used as part of the decoration and later would be given to the kids to enjoy... So, made the ketupat we did...

Kak Hanum's trying hard to remember how to weave the ketupat...

Kak Jaz and Lisna's concentrating to put the sweets inside...

The ketupat...

The decoration's team idea to make a ketupat tree...
Don't ask me where they got all the sticks in this country?!!!

We ended up with about a hundred ketupats. 70 by the ladies and another 30 by En. Jumasri... heheh, because out of all the ladies, only Najwa and Kak Hanum can weave... Proudly I did three imperfect ones... hehehe... at least, better than nothing... hehehe, I did one while Najwa did 10... (that's how slow I was...)

Some people might ask why the end products include pink and purple as well? Well, while in Sudan we have to aacept what they have... sigh... we have learnt to adapt and improvise... (the ribbon were too wide, fine, cut it in two), (no greens and yellows, fine, use other colours...)

On wednesday, the 8th, Syikeen and kak Jaz went to the souk (with the help of block A ladies) to buy all the provisions. When they got back, all the ladies helped with the cutting up and cleaning all the chickens and the meat that they bought. Lisna and I fried the onions for the soup. It was a wonderfully cheery and fun companionship... all in the spirit of raya... hehehe... sorry, no pictures because I forgot to bring my camera... We did a lot of work that day, the whole morning was spent buying the stuff, the second half of the day spent by preparing everything. Some even got home by seven because they cleaned up as well... thanks guys...
